Last March of the Ents Socks

I think fall is the favourite season for many people, it certainly is mine. The air cooling down and how colourful the scenery gets make me happy.

And of course, it’s the start of the knitting season! (You can knit all year long and I do too, but it’s definitely more fun to touch the wool when it’s chilly.)

I think it was a year ago or so, when I discovered another great hand-dyed yarn company on Instagram. They’re called Shirley Brian Yarns and they have an awesome raptor logo (so cool that I had to buy one of their project bags with the logo on it). I first saw their fade sock yarns on Instagram and quickly fell in love.

Another thing that I love about this brand is their colourway names! They have lots of great names based on pop-culture.

The pictured above (from left to right) are: Ready Player, Last March of the Ents, and Aslan. Do you get the movie reference? I love all of the movies which these colourways are inspired by.

Shirley Brian Yarns’ deconstructed fade sock yarns are very unique too. There are not many hand-dyed yarn brands that do the fades like they do. They are just so beautiful!

The first one I decided to knit was the “Last March of the Ents”. This colourway is inspired by The Lord of the Rings. While I’m not sure if it’s based on the book or the movie, LOTR series are my favourite movie series. So I had to get this one.

But also, look at the colours! I really love the earthy tones with a pop of yellow.

I don’t have socks with this type of colours, so I’m really glad I was able to purchase this one. (In case you’re wondering, they have a shop update each month, and in some months their products get sold out really really quickly!)

For most of my socks, including this pair, I knit toe-up, using 2.25 mm needles, and cast on 20 stitches (10 on each needle) using Judy’s magic cast on. I do the increase until there are 60 stitches (30 on each needle).

Because I wanted to make sure my socks show all of the colours of the fade, I made them a lot longer than usual, almost to the knee length.

After the heel, I knit about 30 rounds and then started the increase. I did 4 stitches of increase (2 on each needle), every 10 rounds until there are 88 stitches (44 on each needle).

I love how this pair turned out and how the fade showed up in my socks! Their yarn is fun to knit and dream to wear.

I think it’s also cute to wear them slouchy.

So, in a year or so, I became a big fun of their brand and I kept purchasing from them… But that’s ok because now I can’t wait to knit up their other colourways!
