Mermaid Avenue Socks

When I spotted this sock pattern, I fell in love right away:

This pattern is called Mermaid Avenue Socks and can be found on Ravelry.

The pattern has small diamond-like shapes and together they make a fabric that looks like fish (or in this case, Mermaid’s) scales.

I usually make vanilla socks but evert now and then, I enjoy knitting sock patterns with subtle patterns like this one.

I just happened to have the perfect yarn in my stash for it too…

This colourway is called Siren and is dyed by SugarTots.

Interestingly, Sirens were half human and half bird in Greek mythology, like Harpies. But eventually, the half human half fish version of Sirens became more common.

But anyway, the inspiration for this colourway comes from sirens with fish tales. It is such a beautiful colour! Blue, green, purple, and a hint of navy… I mean, perfect representation of the colour of the sea, don’t you think? Not the scary, deep and dark part of the ocean, but a tropical lagoon, where sun still reaches, making the surface to shine.

The contrast colour I used is:

RCY Hat Trick Semi-Solid in Ride The Pine

This white is not icy pure white, but a warmer off-white (which I really like!)

Needle size I used is 2.25 mm.

I really like using white as a contrasting colour, it looks so refreshing!

Mermaid Avenue sock pattern is written cuff-down. I’m a team toe-up, so I knitted this pair toe-up. I think the pattern looks totally fine even though it’s technically up side down.

If you’re going to do this though, make sure to read the pattern all the way through before you start, just in case!

The scale-like pattern looks unique but it’s fairly simple! It uses slip stitches, which make the fabric less elastic. I added extra four stitches to the leg than I normally knit for that reason. I was also careful to knit loosely around ankles. (Otherwise it was a little too small, and it was hard to put on and off.)

Getting the sizing right was a bit tricky than usual. So this pair took more time than other pairs I’ve knit before. But even with that extra time, I never got bored knitting these… I loved looking at the colour so much.

I’m really happy with how these turned out!

We never wear shoes inside of our house by the way (I think most of people don’t wear shoes inside of their houses in Canada.) My hand-knit socks are what I love to wear at home! With temperature already starting fo go down at night and morning, I’ve been wearing my wool socks again, already.
