Liberty Thorpe Wilder Top

In the last two to three years, I’ve been slowly collecting Liberty fabrics, especially their Tana Lawns.

It took me a long time to be convinced to buy my first Liberty because of its price, but after my first one, I knew why Liberty Tana lawns are loved by many. And the quality is totally worth the money.

The fabric was so pretty that I’ve been somewhat scared to cut into it, but I finally made up my mind. (Well, I actually made this top in October or November.)

I choose “Thorpe” print as my very first Liberty fabric garment!

I initially was going to make a sleeveless top with this print, but after I made one sleeveless top with more affordable floral print (as a practice), I felt pretty satisfied.

So my Thorpe print became a Wilder top!

Pattern: The Wilder Gown by Friday Pattern Co.

The Wilder pattern has three options: maxi length dress, midi length dress, and top.

I used the top option this time.

There is a plenty of gathered fabric around the neck and the shoulder, but the bodice is surprisingly slim. Well, it is still roomy enough to be comfortable and not at all fitted, but it’s a lot less volume in the bodice than I thought.

I think the gathered neckline is so pretty, even on the back too!

You can wear the front open, or with the bow tied. When the bow is tied, the neckline sort of stands up like a collar.

I very much liked the look of it, but unfortunately I didn’t feel comfortable in it when I tried it on. (I have a short neck.)

So I ended up trimming down the top area by 3 cm. This made the neck to lie down more flat and the opening a bit wider which I love!

I didn’t know that the base colour of this Thorpe was dark purple until I was about to cut into the fabric… I thought it was black! It’s pretty either way though.

I’m not sure if you can tell from the pictures, but this top has a bit of a retro vibe. I really like it!

Here I paired it with blue jeans, but I think black bottoms of some sort would go better.

Black corduroy skirt would make it look really retro (which would be cute), and I think it would also look adorable with black pinafore dress.

Now that I’m writing this, I feel that I need a pinafore dress in my closet. Maybe it’s something to sew this fall.
