Hooded Wool Coat

This is my third me-made outerwear, after making denim short jacket and grey ponte short jacket.

I already own a few grey outerwear but I love grey so much!

This one is made out of a pretty dark charcoal grey wool fabric.

The pattern I used is from this Japanese sewing magazine. Female 2010 fall issue. I'm using this magazine a lot this year for outerwear making!

These jackets don’t come with lining pattern pieces though. I’ve added a full lining to mine, but I’m not sure if I did it right as I’m a self-taught. I’d love to learn more about proper coat making basics!

The pattern for the hooded is fro, the Female 2011-2012 Winter issue.

I think the hood turned out pretty well.

This was my first time trying out making bound buttonholes.

It was a good learning opportunity, but I'm not sure if I'm a fan of bound buttonholes. I understand that clothing made with this particular buttonhole method is considered well-tailored but I’m not sure about how they look for some reason.

They kinda look like… fish lips, no?

I feel like they turned a bit too bulky this time. I might have felt differently if they have turned out as pretty and neat as I wanted them to be.

Maybe they seem bulky because my skill isn't simply there yet. Anyways, I like the regular sewing machine buttonholes too, so I'll stick with that for now.

Someday I might want to try making bound buttonholes again, and master this method. Who knows!

Just like buttonholes, there are many things about this coat that aren’t perfect. Just remember, this is a learning process of a self-taught beginner (at coat making.)

I quite like this shape. It’s got a relaxed fit but not too loose.

My favourite part of this coat is the lining fabric, because it’s polka-dot!

I'm still new to the whole outerwear sewing and there're a lot of things that need to be improved (my skill wise). But overall I'm happy with it and I think I'll wear this coat a lot!

I'm very short (even for a Japanese woman), so most of ready-to-wear coats' sleeves are way too long for me.

It's amazing how good it feels to finally be able to wear something that actually fits! "The sleeves don't cover my entire hands!" is a pretty good feeling :)
